WHAT'S HAPPENING AT THE TEAGARDEN'S--OUR BLOG
Saturday, August 30, 2008 - After several hours of packing and loading, we loaded up 4 horses and headed for Eureka. The saddle club showdeo was scheduled and our grandkids were going to ride. They were coming from a trip the other direction so we went to their ranch, picked up the horses and other things they needed and headed back to town with two outfits and six horses (well one pony). It's a fun time. Our grandkids are 5 and 2 1/2 and there are many children their age. The parents lead kids in the events until the kids are comfortable to go on their own. They are riding ranch horses and have lots of fun. One grandma brings two five gallon buckets of sand and dumps under the grand stand every showdeo for the kids. Ava rode Rudy, her dad's horse and Lyle rode Tony the Pony, their pony/minature horse in the lead line class. They shared Tony in the barrels, poles and goat tail untying. Rudy is by Rios First Flit Bar and out of a daughter of Bouncy Mac Three. Matt has had him at the ranch since early summer and he is working out well. Matt is doing a great job with him also.
John saddled up three of the four horses we brought with us and rode them around the showdeo grounds. We had Rare Jet Adams, Adams Rare Jet and Bouncy Sandman with us as well as my gelding Tiger who is by Rare Jet Extremes and is a full brother to the mare pictured on our home page. The colts did great and handled the lights, the horse traffic and the kids just fine. That was encouraging since we were headed to Medicine Lodge, KS to ride in the Gyp hills the next day. I missed snapshots at the showdeo since I was taking care of baby Hannah but here are some pictures of the two older kids and their parents.

Sunday, August 31, 2008 - After breakfast with Ava, Lyle, baby sister Hannah and their parents, we loaded up our
four horses and headed West. We asked Adams Rare Jet (Little Adam) to load in the fourth hole by himself and
after a little encouragement, he hopped right in. We teach our colts to load and back out as babies. Even though
these guys haven't been hauled a lot, they are comfortable with the process and easy to deal with. It only took one
more stop at Wal-Mart for us to feel fully supplied for our (first) trail ride adventure.
We arrived at the Gant-Larson ranch west of Medicine Lodge early in the afternoon. The red dirt, high mesas and
canyons were beautiful (and a little intimidating). We unloaded our four geldings and tied them to the trailer. After
two days of traveling together and spending the night in a pen together, they were content to stand tied to the trailer
while we put up a high line. We moved them to the high line and proceeded to build a hot wire pen for them. After
setting up camp, we saddled up and started on our first trail ride. The ranch has organized rides several times a
year, but you can also go there on your own. There was one other group camped when we pulled in. They were
riding mostly mules. You have access to several thousand acres and you can make your ride as hard or easy as
you want. We did learn that you don't always want to go down what was possible to go up! I rode Tiger and John
rode Sandman. Sandman had only 30 days riding and was very green. He was great on the trail. He was willing to
go wherever John asked and was very safe. Sandman is by Brickhouse Bouncy and out of a daughter of Rare Jet
Extremes.

Monday, September 1, 2008 -- We got up to a beautiful,
cool morning. After we fed and watered, we saddled up
Rare Jet Adam (Big Adam) and Adams Rare Jet (Little
Adam). They are full brothers by Rare Jet Extremes out
of a Flying X 6 - Docs Tom Thumb mare. Big Adam (4)
had 50-60 rides a year ago. John rode him at the
shodeo on Saturday for the first time since then. We
spent some time riding in the meadow and going up and
down some little cuts before we headed to the tougher
trails. He looked around a bit at first but Little Adam (3)
is very calm and he gave Big Adam the confidence he
needed to start out. John was very impressed with Big
Adam. He was a calm and careful horse on the trails
and went where ever we asked. We worked our way up
to the top of a big mesa. We went us some fairly steep
spots and the horses did great. This was also when we
learned the truth of the saying--what goes up must come
down--Even if I didn't really want to go down some of the
places we had to choose.
It took us a while to find our way off of the mesa but we did get safely down and it was lots of fun. I could hardly walk
after 3 plus hours in the saddle. Little Adam had 30 days with Phil Haugen. He can turn on his hocks and that was
helpful a time or two when we needed to turn in a narrow spot and try another path. I rested and recovered the rest
of Monday but John rode all four of the horses again.
